Architecture Department to be first-time host of annual undergrad student leadership forum April 11-12

For the first time in the 澳门开奖历史记录 Department of Architecture鈥檚 history, it will host the annual undergraduate student leadership program geared toward HBCU architectural students. The year鈥檚 forum 鈥� themed 鈥淯ndergraduate Student Leadership in Architecture,鈥� or 鈥淯Lead鈥� 鈥� is scheduled for April 11-12 on the university鈥檚 campus.
鈥淥ur ULead forums bring together an intellectual community of highly motivated students who, through discussions facilitated by faculty and practitioners, explore a wide range of architectural and design topics,鈥� said Dr. Carla Jackson Bell, professor and dean of the Robert R. Taylor School of Architecture and Construction Science. 鈥淪tudents lead discussions on critical issues and design practices that considerably impact academic success in design studios and lecture courses.鈥�
Workshops and tours during the two-day program will examine practical design methodologies; underscore the significance of cultural perspectives like race, gender and space issues in architectural practice and design; and develop critical-thinking skills required across architectural disciplines when creating culturally responsive spaces and communities.
Programming will focus specifically on topics like contemporary digital manufacturing processes and how those are transforming traditional building methods; cultural preservation and documentation of African-American architectural sites; how cultural contexts influence architectural design; and students鈥� approaches to ensuring their post-graduate career success. Hands-on labs and projects that utilize modern industry approaches will expose students to tools like laser scanning, drone technology, and design software.
The concept of the annual gathering of HBCU-based schools of architecture 鈥� of which there are seven among 130-plus total schools nationally 鈥� dates back to the first forum hosted by Howard University in 2010. This year鈥檚 event 鈥� sponsored by the Taylor School of Architecture and Construction Science, and the Alabama Board of Architects 鈥� will be the first one hosted on Tuskegee鈥檚 campus, and its focus is expanding beyond HBCUs to include architecture students at neighboring Auburn University.
