Publix Super Markets human resource staffing specialist and 1998 alumna Nneka Wells will serve as the keynote speaker for the Department of Social Work’s pinning ceremony on Friday, May 10. The event will begin at 6 p.m. in the University Chapel.

During the ceremony, social work majors who have completed their coursework will be presented with their social work lapel pin, signifying the completion of their academic degree,  and recite the social work professional oath.

Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, Wells honed her sense of service as a member of Tuskegee’s chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. She credits this experience with launching her role as an internship program manager, where she mentored and assisted college students with career development. In 2001, she completed a master’s of human resources degree at the University of South Carolina’s Darla Moore School of Business. She also holds the Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) and the SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) designations from the Society of Human Resource Management.

In her current role with Publix, Wells is responsible for hiring company associates. She said traveling coast to coast setting up employment interviews may sound hectic, but she readily admits it beats sitting at a desk. Being able to help people find employment opportunities, she said, never gets tiring and, to her, is “the epitome of service.”

Tuskegee’s Department of Social Work, based in the College of Arts and Sciences, offers a bachelor’s degree in social work, as well as options for students in other academic disciplines to double major or minor in social work. The department is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and is a member of the Association of Baccalaureate Social Work Program Directors. Learn more on the department’s website.

The May 10 Social Work Pinning Ceremony is one of several events leading up to the university’s 134th Spring Commencement Exercises on Saturday, May 11. The ceremony — featuring speaker Loretta Lynch, the nation’s 83rd U.S. attorney general — will begin at 10 a.m. in the university’s Gen. Daniel “Chappie” James Arena. For more information, .
