Bushwick: one of the best neighborhood in NYC

Hey Loves!

As you know, I am still a newcomer to this big city. And even though I don’t have much free time, I am trying to discover every corner of this amazing Jungle. So, last week, as you may have seen in my IG, we went to a neighborhood where I hadn’t been before; Bushwick in Brooklyn.

I found this neighborhood to be a really unique place, where industry, retiring due to gentrification, gives way to artists that flood the streets with colorful murals.

We started walking around, admiring the wide variety of graffiti. Many of them sponsored by modern restaurants that are popping up here and there.

In the end, we arrived at a restaurant that reflected the Bushwick neighborhood of essence. Halfway between abandoned and modern. A bunch of industrial containers attached to an old red brick factory with huge foggy windows.

The contrast between the exterior and the interior reminds me of what Alice in wonderland could have felt when falling through the burrow. All of a sudden, we were in southeast Asia. Exuberant vegetation everywhere, strategically uncoordinated furniture, the bar under a palm tree roof, and the warm smell of sautéed species.

But the best was yet to come, a broad menu of traditional Vietnamese dishes with a contemporary twist. Within them, plenty of vegan options like:

  • Green Papaya Salad.
    • A classic from the Vietnamese cuisine and a perfect lunch kick-off. The green papaya enzymes will help you digest the rest of the feast, and it’s full of antioxidants
  • Spring rolls
    • To keep it short: AMAZING! And I could leave it there because whatever I say next is going to be redundant. In my opinion, the secret is all about the XL mushrooms the flooded the interior. The earthy flavor and its texture turn this simple dish in one worthy of crossing the whole city.
  • Pho
    • Or Vietnamese soup. Apart from being perfect for chilly days, this pho, in particular, was surprisingly tasteful and robust. Sometimes vegan stocks lack that rich background that beef or poultry stocks have, but not this one, which was really intense and aromatic. Once more, the mushrooms played an important role. Its meaty texture was the perfect counterpoint to the delicate rice noodles. Therefore, one of the best pho I’ve ever had!
  • Vegetable Coconut Curry
    • Maybe a bit too spicy for me, but still worthy of trying it. The coconut curry matches perfectly with the fragrant basmati rice. The special touch was the eggplant. I thought it was a perfect mixture both in flavor and texture.

I have to say that vegan dessert where available (Hallelujah!), but after this banquet, I couldn’t have anything else!

Determined to take a walk after flavor festival to help digestion, we did not get too far. Since a few feet away, we found a small coffee shop that also wanted to show the transformation that Bushwick neighborhood is going through.

An old coffee roaster, an industrial space, where a small room has been enabled as a coffee shop with an exquisite taste for design, suggestively combining colors and materials.

Both spaces are communicated through a glass that allows you to see where the coffee is roasted while you taste it.

And what about the coffee? It matched some of the best Italian espressos! Hot, with an intense aroma, slightly creamy and full-bodied, without the need for any addition. Ideal to finish any meal!

All in all, a perfect Sunday, walking under the winter sun, discovering new parts of the city, and seeing how little by little the vegan options are extended to almost any corner. Have you ever been in Bushwick?

Hope you find it useful and let me know if you get to try any of these treasures!
