These last days at home, I have been reviewing my small collection of books looking for old jewels to reread. And it was then when this book by Dr.Fuhrman fell into my hands again. I’ve read this book in its entirety a couple of times and gone through some chapters a few more.

I always find it fascinating, as it provides scientific information in an assimilable and straightforward way.

Many times I get asked about what book I would recommend to someone that has never been aware of what they eat or their health and want to start making some changes. And most of the time I recommend this one. I think it is a very complete book and available to everyone. No matter the background.

WHO? Joel Fuhrman. A former competitive figure skater that retire after various injuries. He claims that an alternative medicine therapy based on nutrient-rich food helped speed his recovery and led him to become a physician.

WHERE? It’s a book to read carefully and take notes, so I recommend reading it somewhere conformable, with time, and your favorite cup of tea.

WHY? These weeks that most of us find ourselves almost lock inside, with less physical activity than usual, and with plenty of access to the fridge, I think it’s a good moment to consider what we are using as fuel, and what service is doing to our body.

WHAT? What you are going to find is a very complete guide on how to improve your health, just introducing some changes to your diet.

Dr. Fuhrman offers a highly effective, scientifically proven way to walk away from the effects of the Standard American diet. In this book, you will find a six-week diet plan based on his simple formula health = nutrients/calories. According to Dr. Fuhrman, when the ratio of nutrients to calories in the food you eat is high, you improve your health, lose weight, and, ultimately, live longer. The more nutrient-dense food you eat, the less you crave fat, sweets, and high-caloric foods. Sounds good, right?

All in all, it is a wake-up call to make significant improvements in our lives, to live better and longer.

WHEN? I’ve had this book for a while now, and I find that it’s one of those books I go back from time to time to check before creating a new weekly menu or recipe.

WHAT IS THE CALL TO ACTION? If you are looking for a book that clearly and concisely explains the mistakes we make when following the Standard American Diet, this is your book.

Each chapter focuses on a topic, and it’s illustrated with real cases from his patients. I personally found this really useful as it helped me connect much more with the reality he is describing, to understand the problem, and therefore introduce the solution to my routine. Also, at the end of the book, Dr. Furhman shares recipes for the six week-plan, like for example this delicious pasta recipe, the icing of the cake!
