What are the coolest reusable cups and bottles for this Spring?
What do the reusable bottles and looking chic this spring have to do with sustainability? More than 60 million plastic bottles end up in landfills and incinerators every day, a total of about 22 billion last year.
Six times more plastic water bottles were thrown away in 2004 than in 1997. Plastic bottles clog streams and tributaries that flow into rivers in the United States. Bottles that are not being held by fallen trees and other debris along our inland waterways are floating in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. From there, they find their way to the shores of island communities and coastal countries that are just beginning to experience the problems associated with plastic bottle waste.
According to Pollution facts:
- In 2014, 100.7 billion plastic beverage bottles were sold in the US, or 315 bottles per person.
- 57% of those units were plastic water bottles: 57.3 billion sold in 2014. This is up from 3.8 billion plastic water bottles sold in 1996, the first year for available data.
- The bottled water production process requires about six times more water per bottle than in the container.
- 14% of all garbage comes from beverage containers. When covers and labels are considered, the number is higher.
And what can we do to help?
Our problem with plastic can be pretty simple to solve if we all do our part. We need to get rid of our dependency on plastic and find better and more sustainable options. Recycling is not the solution but reducing our plastic consumption. One of the best choices we have today to cut plastic consumption is to use our reusable bottles. And while this by itself won’t save the planet, it will reduce your plastic consumption and waste.
