What supplements are needed on a plant-based diet?

Vegan or not, if our diet is not planned properly, we will not get the essential nutrition our bodies require. In such cases, we need to back on supplements to help our bodies get the nutrition it requires. In certain situations, our bodies are not able to absorb nutrition from the food we consume. This is where we need to support our bodies with external sources of nutrition, such as supplements.

Today, we will be talking about plant-based diet supplements. These supplements are not vegan specific, and we encourage everyone to read about them so that you can include them in your diet, irrespective of your food preference if needed. Let’s get started:

Vegan Omega 3

The vegan version of Omega 3 supplements is sourced from algae and is not animal-based. This supplement supports healthy heart development and helps cut down the risk of cardiovascular disease. It also improves the functioning of the brain, strengthening memory and quickening our reactive time.

Great for the eye-health, is very helpful if consumed during pregnancy, as it helps for the overall development of the child.

If you’re looking to include it in your dishes add some flax seeds meal, chia seeds, or hemp seeds to your dishes. How about an Energy Booster Smoothie with chia seeds for breakfast?

 Vitamin B12

One of the most important vitamins out there, this nutrient helps to keep our body’s nerves and blood cells healthy. It is crucial for DNA generation and also helps to produce red blood cells in the body. Again, this element is crucial during pregnancy, as it helps for the proper growth and development of the fetus.

It also helps to maintain the health of your bones, thus cutting down the risk of osteoporosis. While B12 is naturally found in many foods, it is water-soluble and needs to be replenished on a daily basis. That is why it is advisable to consume this supplement regularly.

Moreover, plant-based or not, humans tend to have a deficit of this vitamin when we go over 50, so be sure to check it out in your next blood test!

If you’re looking to include it in your dishes sprinkle your dishes with nutritional yeast or add some tempeh to your pasta or a bit of spirulina to your breakfast smoothie.

Probiotics

We may not realize it, but for most of us, an unhealthy gut is the cause of many illnesses. To maintain a good healthy gut, we need to ensure we supply it with ample probiotics. Probiotics are found in lots of foods, which we can include in our diet. If this isn’t enough, we can always opt for supplements.

Certain probiotic strains also contribute to a healthy heart. Thanks to the numerous health benefits probiotics offer, it makes complete sense to add them to our diets right away.

Today it’s easy to find a wide variety of them, form specific to sex or to age, so check them out and get the one that suits you best.

Vitamin D

Sunshine is the best source of vitamin D, but if we live in countries where the climate is perennially or majorly cold with no sign of sunlight, we need to opt for supplements. Vitamin D helps to regulate the calcium and phosphate levels in our body. These nutrients are essential to keep the bones, teeth, and muscles healthy.

This type of vitamin also plays a major role in our immune system. Research done in 2011 showed how a deficiency in this vitamin could be linked to an increase in autoimmune issues and a higher risk of developing infections.

A dose of vitamin D supplements will work like magic on your overall health, so try including it in your diet.

Besides the supplements the best advice is to try to get some sunlight every day, anything between 10 to 30 minutes will make wonders. Also, try adding some delicious mushroom dishes to your menus. How about some Mole Mushroom Tacos or Chestnut Mushroom Pasta?

Summing Up: Plant-based & supplements

One of the most common misconceptions out there is that only vegans require nutritional supplements.

But in reality, not only vegans but each one of us must consider including nutritional supplements in our everyday diet. Irrespective of the diets we follow, our bodies still miss out on certain essential nutritive elements. And these missing elements can be replenished with the help of supplements.

Our diets should always be the main source of nourishment in our body; supplements should always be a backup option. Also, remember to read carefully all the nutritional labels, with the supplements industry over the moon is easy to get distracted with flashy labels.

We hope this information helps you chart out a properly balanced plant-based diet aided with supplements.
