The 5 Best Vegan Restaurants in San Diego

Planning a trip to this amazing city in California? Don’t miss the 5 best healthy, plant-based, vegan restaurants in San Diego!

San Diego is shaping up to be the next vegan hot spot. More than half a dozen plant-based restaurants opened up in 2019 alone. Today, you can find plant-based versions of all your favorite dishes – meat-based or not. Of course, like any other restaurant scene, some eateries are better than others.

These five vegan restaurants are some of the best that San Diego has to offer.

Visiting a different city? We have you covered!

KINDRED is the brainchild of Kory Stetina, the creator of LOVELIKEBEER (the craft beer and vegan pop-up dinners that support charity). With its weird and wonderful décor, KINDRED is known as a “death metal vegan” restaurant. But it’s so much more than that.

Stetina’s goal was to build a menu with delicious food that just so happens to be vegan. Popular dishes include their Memphis BBQ Jackfruit and Grilled Cheese. They serve brunch on weekends from 10 am-2 pm.

If vegan food isn’t your thing, they have an impressive cocktail menu as well as beer, wine, and non-alcoholic drinks. Stop by on Thursday for Permanent Vacation, which features tropical-inspired drinks and their Egg Roll Burger.

KINDRED’s prices are reasonable, and their portions are more than generous. And in the future, the restaurant will be offering its own house-made, healthy vegan cheese.

KINDRED offers dine-in, delivery, and takeout options.

The Plot

Proudly plant-based, The Plot was rated 2020’s Best New Restaurant and Best Vegan Restaurant by San Diego Magazine, Ranch & Coast Magazine, Critic’s Choice, and The San Diego Union-Tribune.

The zero-waste vegan restaurant has an affordable, diverse menu with unique dishes bursting with flavor.

Try the Chronic sushi, featuring lion’s mane mushroom “meat,” or the “chicken” and waffles. The shepherd’s pie is a customer favorite, but you’ll find globally-inspired dishes as well, like Okinawan sweet potato gnocchi or the creamy polenta cake with chorizo.

End your meal with a dark chocolate torte or a slice of plot cake.

Guests can also choose a range of cocktails, beer, wine, and cider. In addition, they have kombucha on tap as well as espresso drinks and non-alcoholic options, like green tea soda or rishi hot tea.

The Plot is now open for brunch on weekends. Guests can order online or dine in. The restaurant has plenty of outdoor patio seating. If you’re into sharing dishes, The Plot has various options for groups.

To really drive their commitment to sustainability home, The Plot has partnered with reVessel to offer reusable takeout packaging. The Plot is one of the best restaurants not only for vegans in San Diego but for anyone concerned about sustainability and eco-friendliness.

Eve is a vegan restaurant in Oceanside that now calls itself ERIS Food Co. While Eve was a popular eatery, they’re back as ERIS, which proudly states that they’re the “Same Crew, new Vegan food with some old favorites.”

Located on Wisconsin Avenue in Oceanside, the restaurant is open Wednesday through Sunday from 12 pm to 5 pm.

Delightful dishes on the menu include Seitan tacos, fysh tacos, burgers – without the meat – and sweet potato fries that people absolutely adore. The evolution of Eve is still new, with ERIS coming to life in October 2021.

The Yasai

The Yasai is a concept by Rakiraki that Junya Watanabe brought to life. Junya, the owner and executive chef, wanted to bring a new, delectable plant-based experience to Convoy Street. His extensive travels abroad led him to develop a menu that is heavily influenced by Japanese dishes.

The Yasai offers Japanese vegan cuisine with the iconic vegetable in the middle concept.

Watanabe’s concept came to life in November 2019, and his fusion of passion and creativity has allowed him to redefine the meaning of vegan.

Menu items include a wide range of choices, such as:

  • Ramen bowls
  • Sushi rolls
  • Tempura panko fried rolls with Impossible meat
  • Much more

Perhaps the best way to describe the flavorful experience is awakening

Veganic Thai

Veganic Thai Café was named one of the four, must-try vegan restaurants in all of San Diego. Thai food and plant-based ingredients help create a flavorful menu with organic produce. Dishes hit the tastebuds and overwhelm the senses with delightful choices, such as Panang curry, to choose from.

Leading dishes include steamed dumplings, rice paper rolls, pan-fried noodles, and much more.

Rated one of the best restaurants in San Diego for vegan fare, the café opened in 2015 with the goal of offering the same Thai cuisine that foodies love without:

  • Eggs
  • Dairy
  • Meat
  • Fish

Outdoor patio dining and to-go orders are a hit among patrons, and there is also a beautiful interior offering Southern Asian décor. Perfectly situated on University Ave in San Diego, Veganic Thai Café is one of the eateries that you’ll want to try if you’re in the area.
